Art intent statement:

“Every child is an artist.  The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up” – Pablo Picasso


At Wimborne First School and Nursery, we have designed our Art, Craft and Design curriculum with the intent that it encourages our children to develop and extend their creative skills along with an opportunity for self-expression and a chance to develop resilience, confidence and critical thinking skills through individual or collaborative activities.


Our Art, Craft & Design curriculum engages, inspires and challenges children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of Art and Design.  

Implementation:

Art across the school in is taught in ‘unit’ blocks throughout the year. This is to enable the children to achieve depth in their learning and build a solid foundation of knowledge and understanding of the Formal elements as well as the History of Art and Artists. Our curriculum is structured to focus on the progression of skills across three areas; drawing, painting and sculpture. As children progress, they are able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art, Craft & Design.

Impact

Assessment in Art aims to gather evidence of the children’s knowledge. This is done through a range of assessment activities that take place at the end of each unit such as a quiz, a final piece of work or a discussion based around a piece of art. These are all designed to enable the children to have the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding that they have gained over the course of their unit of learning. Teachers also use AFL throughout each unit to ensure that key knowledge is building and to also highlight any misconceptions that can be addressed either at the time or during our weekly catch-up sessions. Retrieval practise is also built into many lessons and given at the start of each new unit. The aim of this is to ensure that children’s knowledge continues to build throughout each year.
Evidence of progression and achievement will be seen in examples of children’s’ work which will be stored in their Sketch books.


As a result of effective implementation, children will be able to apply their skills and knowledge in other areas of learning. The children will be familiar with and will discuss their understanding of the seven formal elements of art and will know key vocabulary associated with these. The confidence within each unit and the concept and components will increase and mean that the children can be more independent and experienced when applying their skills to independent creative activities.
