Information about Year 2:

Reading

The children will bring home a ‘learn to read’ book. This book is closely matched to their phonic/reading ability. It is the book that we would like your child to read independently, out loud. This book will be changed at the teacher’s discretion. We would encourage the children to read this three times a week. In addition, the children will bring home a 'love to read' book. This book is to be chosen by your child from the library or book corner. This book can either be read by the child or at a shared reading time with family or friends. This book can be changed once a week.

The children can receive a prize from the school reading shop, if they have read either their 'learn to read' or 'love to read' book 20 times. The children will also have the opportunity to take part in our Book Bingo. The aim is to read a range of books shown on the Book Bingo in the back of their reading records. Once completed a line, two lines or a full house, they will receive raffle tickets. Their name will go into a prize draw, which will be revealed at the end of each half term. Please remember to sign your child's reading record after every read.

Top tip: The more the children read, the more raffle tickets they will earn, and the more change they will have at winning a prize.

For more information on reading, please see our English curriculum page.

Times tables

Recognition and recall of Times table facts is an important part of our Maths curriculum. We use a program called ‘Times table Rockstars’ to support their daily practice - each child will come home with their own login and will be set multiplication and division facts for them to recall, practice and develop at speed. Alongside this, they also have access to Numbots for number, addition, subtraction. The children have an opportunity to be tested each week on their times table. Any additional support with times tables at home would be beneficial.

Home Learning
Each week, we link the home learning with the work the children have been learning and completing in school. This will give the children the opportunity to further develop the skills they have been learning in class.

Home learning will be sent out on a Friday and we ask for it to be back in school by the Wednesday. If home learning is not in on a Wednesday, it will unfortunately not be marked.

We encourage the children to complete their home learning every week, alongside reading their 'learn to read book' three times a week as well as continuing to recall and practice their 2, 5 and 10 times table and division facts.

Curriculum Overview:

Each half term the children will focus on different units of learning within their foundation subjects, more information of these can be found on our curriculum pages.

Please see below our curriculum maps for each half term.
