Information about Year 4

Reading

The children will bring home a ‘learn to read’ book. This book is closely matched to their reading ability. It is the book that we would like your child to read independently, out loud. This book will be changed at the teacher’s discretion. We would encourage the children to read this three times a week. In addition, the children will bring home a 'love to read' book. This book is to be chosen by your child from the library or book corner. This book can either be read by the child or at a shared reading time with family or friends. This book can be changed once a week and this will usually be done during our library sessions.

The children can receive a prize from the school reading shop, if they have read either their 'learn to read' or 'love to read' book 20 times. The children will also have the opportunity to take part in our Book Bingo. The aim is to read a range of books shown on the Book Bingo in the back of their reading records. Once completed a line, two lines or a full house, they will receive raffle tickets. Their name will go into a prize draw, which will be revealed at the end of each half term.

Top tip: The more the children read, the more raffle tickets they will earn, and the more change they will have at winning a prize.

For more information on reading, please see our English curriculum page.

Times tables

Recognition and recall of Times table facts is an important part of our Maths curriculum. We use a program called ‘Times table Rockstars’ to support their daily practice - each child will come home with their own login and will be set multiplication and division facts for them to recall, practice and develop at speed. At the end of Year 4 the children will complete a times table check which requires them to know all of their times table facts up to the 12s. To encourage confidence and quick recall of these facts we will send out a times table book which will include a focus times table that they need to work on, these will be sent home on a Friday with a new times table added every 2 weeks following their quiz. They will be tested in a standalone quiz after two weeks, therefore we would like the children to use Times Table Rock Stars to practise these in readiness for the quiz. The children may be set a times table that they already know, but this is to ensure that they can still recall those facts quickly.

Times table practise is most effective when it is regular and in short bursts as this strengthens the children's long term memory.

Home Learning
We link the home learning sent home with the work the children have been doing in school.  Home learning will be sent out on a Friday and we ask for it to be back in school by the Wednesday. If home learning is not in on a Wednesday, it will unfortunately not be marked. We encourage the children to complete their home learning every week, alongside reading their 'learn to read book' three times a week.
