Year 2

Unit 1: Creating Media: Digital Photography

The children began their Computing learning during Autumn term by recognising that different devices can be used to capture photographs and they gained experience capturing, editing, and improving photos. They discussed and used their knowledge to recognise that images they see may not be real.

Unit 2: Technology in our lives

The children developed their understanding of what information technology (IT) is and they identified some examples of these. They discussed and pointed out where they have seen IT in school and beyond, in settings such as shops (bar codes), libraries and the outside world such as the use of technology for traffic lights. They investigated how IT improves our world, and they learnt the importance of using IT responsibly and safely. This linked to our regular discussions on Internet Safety.

Unit 3: Programming: Robot Algorithms

The children have developed

This unit develops learners’ understanding of instructions in sequences and the use of logical reasoning to predict outcomes. Learners will use given commands in different orders to investigate how the order affects the outcome. They will also learn about design in programming. They will develop artwork and test it for use in a program. They will design algorithms and then test those algorithms as programs and debug them.

Unit 4: Data Handling: Pictograms

The children began the unit, discovering and discussing what the term data means and how data can be collected in the form of a tally chart. They used the term ‘attribute’ to help them organise data. The children then progressed onto presenting data visually using software. They used the data presented to answer questions. During this unit of work the children used the j2e pictogram and j2e chart tools which were accessed online using a laptop. In addition, they recalled the key elements of the safe use of the internet and were excellent at following these rules throughout their use of J2e pictogram website.
