Intent

At Wimborne First School and Nursery, reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We believe the greatest gift we can give our learners is the love of reading. We therefore aim to ensure that every child leaves us not only with the ability to read easily, fluently and with good understanding, but with a real passion for literature. We strive for excellence in all of our school activities and encourage all pupils, whatever their ability, to have access to the education, opportunities, and resources needed to read. 

Our reading lessons ensure that children’s vocabulary, knowledge and experiences are deepened through the use of carefully planned, high-quality texts. We believe that providing pupils with a well-balanced, enriching and engaging English curriculum will support them in developing into self-assured communicators and encourage them to become independent, lifelong learners.

 

Implementation

English Provision at Wimborne First School and Nursery, follows the National Curriculum Programme of Study for each year group. From Nursery to Year 1, we use our phonics scheme ‘Read, Write, Inc’. From Years 2 to Year 4, we use ‘Literary Tree’, which is a complete, thematic approach to the teaching of English that places children's literature at its core. Alongside our Literacy Leaves program (reading), we follow the Writing Roots (writing) of the program, which embed complete curriculum coverage and engage children to write with clear audience and purpose. To complement our reading and writing curriculum, we follow the Spelling Seed (spelling) that includes open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts.  Our teach through a text pedagogy is the backbone of each sequence. 

Phonics Teaching

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, reading lessons are predominantly weighted towards decoding and skilled word reading. Children learn how to read through discrete phonics lessons followed by a reading lesson that is matched explicitly to their phonics teaching. For further information, please refer to our Phonics tab on our website. 

Whole class reading lessons

While children in EYFS and Key Stage 1 complete daily Read, Write, Inc. phonics and word reading sessions, we also recognise the importance of children being immersed in rich text discussion and comprehension questioning. For this reason, children are exposed to a wide range of exciting and engaging texts using our 'book talk' books which are mapped out on our whole school text map. Alongside this, they have timetabled time to read in groups and with their teacher. These sessions are mainly discussion based with some recording when appropriate. 

During spring term of Year 2 and Key Stage 2, the weighting of taught reading shifts towards comprehension. Reading comprehension skills are taught as a whole class model, providing children with the opportunity to experience high-quality discussion with the teacher, as well as from exploring and discussing a range of fiction, poems and non-fiction texts. We also place a huge emphasis on the teaching of fluency ensuring children are exposed to; 

  • The teacher reading
  • Echo reading
  • Paired reading 
  • Focus on prosody skills 

Teachers across both Key Stages will consider our reading symbols when planning, teaching and questioning in comprehension lessons. These symbols match the VIPERS strands and ensures that all children become proficient across all of the National Curriculum reading domains. It is important to note that the domains are not explicitly taught, but rather used to provide rich discussion.

Protecting a Love of Reading

At Wimborne First School and Nursery, we see promoting a love of reading as a vital element within our daily timetable. Each day, all classes have a dedicated time within the timetable (3:00pm-3:15pm) to share a book. Teachers use intonation and prosody skills to promote enjoyment and fluency in these sessions. These books are carefully planned, in the section of our 'book talk' text mapping, along with rhymes and poems to promote opportunities for Oracy. Please see at the bottom of this page for the link to our whole school text map. 

Reading Books

 'Learn to Read Book' and 'Love to Read Book'

Your child's ‘Learn to Read Book’  is closely matched to their phonic/reading ability. It is the book that we would like your child to read independently, out loud. This book will be changed at the teacher’s discretion.



The second book they will bring home is a ‘Love to Read Book’ which is to be chosen by your child from the library or book corner. This book can either be read by the child or at a shared reading time with family or friends. This book can be changed once a week.

Home Reading- How can you help your child at home? 

20 Reads

After speaking with some of the children, it was evident that they loved the 20 read challenge we launched, some years ago. So after popular demand… IT IS BACK!

The children can now receive a prize from the reading shop in school! If they have read either their Learn or Love to read book 20 times, they can visit the shop and choose a prize of their choice from the 20 reads section.

Rules:

  • One read a day, is one entry!
  • They have to record the book they have been reading, in their reading record.
  • Once they have recorded 20 entries, an adult in school will mark the reading record and their count can begin again.

Book Bingo

Book Bingo was a huge success last year, with so many of the children participating! This years winners, can choose a book from the reading shop in school, where there will be a Book Bingo section for them to choose from. 

A reminder of how Book Bingo works:

Like the game of Bingo, the aim is to complete the board. Only this board is made up of different text types and reading criteria as opposed to numbers. Once the children have read a set number of books, they will receive a raffle ticket. Their name will then go into a prize draw, which will be chosen by Mrs Rees at the end of each half term. The more the children read, the more raffle tickets they will earn, and the more chance they will have of winning a prize.

Example of a Book Bingo board;

Every time your child completes a new line on their board, they need to tell their teacher who will then check and reward them with the correct amount of raffle tickets in the draw. Once the board is completed, your child will receive a new board with different text types and reading criteria. Please track the books your child has read by recording the titles on the Bingo board. The Bingo boards will be kept at the back of your child’s reading record.

For our early readers, we appreciate that they are still developing their reading skills and will not be able to access all these texts independently. We would still love the children to experience the different genres but appreciate these will be part of a shared story time, rather than an independent read.

Where possible, we would love the children to read to you, so choosing books (within the specified genres) at an appropriate level would be beneficial. We will encourage the children to choose their love to read book so that it is specifically chosen for their book Bingo board.

It is very important that your child recognises that Book Bingo is not a race. It is an opportunity to broaden the children's reading diet.

Reminders

  • Please encourage your child to read their Learn to read book at least three times a week, in addition to the love to read book.
  • In year’s reception, 1 and 2, we would expect your child to read 10 minutes of their ‘Learn to read’ book.
  • In years three and four, we expect them to be reading approximately 15 minutes or more.
  • We ask that your child’s reading record is in their book bag every day.
