Geography - Year 4

Year 4- Autumn: Europe and the World

Children look at the continent of Europe and study some of the countries within it. They study many different topographical features of some specific countries and make comparisons. They use a range of different maps, globes and digital mapping programmes to explore tropics and the concepts of longitude and latitude.

Spring: Weather Across the Continent

Children look at the continent of Europe in continuing detail with a focus on a specific region. They study weather patterns across the continent and write short reports on their findings. They continue to build their knowledge of maps through studying OS maps, using keys and symbols and building a confident bank of directional language. When looking at a specific region children learn about its role in food distribution across the continent.

Environmental Focus: How do people impact on the world’s climate? Focus on food distribution.

Summer: Understanding our environment

In this unit children develop their fieldwork skills through studies of their own environment. They study rivers and develop knowledge of concepts such as erosion and learn about the water cycle and the role it plays in the weather. They learn how to use 6-figure grid references to locate 4 rivers in our local area and complete a fieldwork study on a local river. They use a range of equipment to gather and record data and then present this data through the use of graphs and short written reports to explain what they have observed.
