Number Facts and Fluency

During Reception, Year One and Year Two, the children complete the NCTEM  ‘Mastering Number Programme’ in addition to our daily maths lessons to support the children in developing rapid recall of key number facts.

We believe that basic number facts knowledge are of paramount importance and that children need to become fluent in these so  they are practised and recalled regularly. We believe that these are important to build upon more complex number facts as the maths curriculum progresses.

These facts are particularly useful when calculating, adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. They contain number facts such as number bonds and doubles that need constant practise and rehearsal, so children can recall them quickly and accurately. Instant recall of facts helps enormously with mental maths in lessons. When children move onto written calculations, knowing these key facts is very beneficial. The children need to become efficient in recalling them easily, and therefore, we practise them regularly throughout years one and two, along with recapping them in year three.

The number facts fluency document shows the number facts that the children learn. Please also find below an overview of what children learn during their Mastering Number sessions.
