Maths Year 2
Year 2
Autumn Term
The children began the year by recapping the importance of number formation and number sentences. They learnt to understand the place value of a 2-digit number, considering the value of tens and ones on a place value chart and using a range of concrete materials to support them. The children considered how a number square is built up, using the vocabulary ‘more or less’. They learnt how to use a part- whole model and how this contributes to their overall understanding of number and calculations.
Spring Term
This term, the children developed their knowledge of addition and subtraction by looking at the 'difference' in greater detail. During number sessions, they continued to develop their knowledge to be able to automatically recall all of the addition and subtraction facts within 10. They then applied them to use to add and subtract two digit numbers. For example, 6+4=10 so 16+4=20,26+4=30, 26+14=40. We also learnt about shapes. They have also described, sorted, and classified both 2D and 3D shapes as well as identifying 2D shapes on the surface of 3D shapes.
