Maths Year 3

Year 3

Autumn Term

The children started Autumn term with a number unit, focussing on place value by revising their understanding of hundreds, tens and ones from year 2. They then explored different representations to recognise the value of each digit in  3-digit numbers. They  then moved on to adding and subtracting numbers with up to three digits, using formal written methods of columnar addition   and subtraction. They solved problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value.  Alongside this, they used estimation and inverse operations to check   answers.

Spring Term

This term, the children continued to explore mental calculation strategies. They added and subtracted 2 and 3-digit numbers, using differing strategies such as adjustment, partitioning and redistribution. They explored multi-step addition and subtraction problems.

The children then moved onto recognising Right angles. They learnt to recognise it as a property of shape or a description of a turn. The learnt to identify whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle.
