Get on Board
In this unit, the children explored rhythm and tempo and had the opportunity to play music, changing tempo and maintaining an ostinato. They then recorded rhythmic patterns using simple musical notation. Finally, they worked together to compose a class piece based on a musical journey through a landscape.
Light Fantastic
Throughout this unit the children explored pentatonic scales through songs and tuned percussion. They then composed melodies for different types of fireworks and used a photograph as a basis for a musical score. Finally they created a final performance of a song using accompaniment and improvised melodies.
Spring
Rockin Recorders 1
In this unit the children learnt to play the descant recorder from the very beginning. They looked at how to hold and blow the instrument correctly and gradually built up their knowledge of notes. They focused on sound before symbol but they started to read simple rhythms using crotchets and quavers displayed both as letters and music notation. During the unit they learnt to sing a song together and composed short rhythmic and melodic phrases to play on their recorders.
