PE - Year 1

Autumn 1:

Fundamentals: In this unit, pupils will explore the fundamental skills of balancing, running, changing direction, jumping, hopping and skipping. They will explore these skills in isolation as well as in combination. Pupils will be given opportunities to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement. They will work collaboratively with others, taking turns and sharing ideas. Children will master basic movements including running, jumping and throwing. Additionally, they will develop balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.

Team Building: In this unit, pupils develop their teamwork skills. They will work individually, in pairs and in small groups, learning to take turns, work collaboratively and lead each other. Pupils will work on developing key skills of communication and problem solving. They are given the opportunity to discuss and plan their ideas and reflect on their success.

Autumn 2

Ball skills: In this unit, pupils will explore and develop their fundamental ball skills such as throwing and catching and rolling and dribbling with both hands and feet. They will look to perform these skills with increasing control and accuracy using co-ordination and balance. Pupils will have the opportunity to work independently and collaboratively in pairs and small groups. Pupils will be able to explore their own ideas in response to tasks.

Yoga: Pupils will learn about mindfulness and body awareness. They begin to learn poses and techniques that will help them to connect their mind and body. The unit looks to improve well-being by building strength, flexibility, co-ordination and balance. The learning includes breathing and meditation through fun and engaging activities. Pupils work independently, with a partner and in small groups.

Spring 1

In spring 1, we focused on feet and Gymnastics

Following on from reception, children developed their ability to apply effective dribbling skills. Children developed their understanding of why we need to be accurate when kicking (passing) a ball. Pupils were able to collaborate and work together in a team.

In gymnastics we have been developing pupils’ ability to apply ‘champion gymnastics’ as they explored movements and balances in wide, narrow and curled ways on the floor and on apparatus. Pupils transitioned between the theme words as they moved and developed simple sequences, linking movements together.

Spring 2

The focus was hands (ball skills) and dance

In ball skills the children consolidated their ability to accurately roll a ball towards a target. Children combined their sending and stopping skills, applying their prior knowledge of where we send a ball and why to score points to beat an opponent.

In dance the pupils have responded to the stimulus (different zoo animals) using a range of different, controlled movements showing character expression. Children have learnt how to co-ordinate and control their bodies to perform movements, creating a sequence.

Summer 1

Year 1 will focus on jumping and rackets, bats and balls.

In jumping the children have learnt how and why we jump, using our head, arms and feet, applying the correct jumping technique. Children have began to understand the different reasons when, where and why we jump in different ways.

In rackets, bats and balls children have developed their ability to keep a ball controlled using a racket. Pupils have also explored and developed their hitting (pushing) skills using a ball and a racket accurately. Pupils will apply their understanding of accuracy and space in a variety of games.

Summer 2

The focus will be Games for understanding and sports day practice/athletics

The unit of work will develop childrens’ ability to apply simple principles of attack vs defence, with a particular focus on creating simple tactics in order to win the game. Pupils will develop their understanding of how, where and why to attack and defend in a game.
